  • Encourage your your child to express his/her feelings
  • Acknowledge (& tolerate) those feelings expressed by your child
  • Express your own feelings (though within appropriate limits)
  • Be willing to resolve conflict
  • Problem-solve by citing the problem and considering alternatives
  • Offer emotional support
  • Be willing to acknowledge own shortcomings (within limits)
  • Recognize personal choice of your child whenever possible
  • Coordinate limits with spouse/partner
  • Keep criticism constructive
  • Punish via time-out periods – removal of privileges
  • Avoid physical punishments
  • Keep punishments realistic, enforceable, and in keeping with the problem
  • Play with your child; spend quality time together
  • Encourage your child to explore, try new things
